Douglas Laing has really come to bat with the Kensington Wine Market Whisky Advent Calendar! Today’s dram is their Rock Island expression from their Remarkable Regional Malt series. Bottled at 46.8% ABV, this salt-ry dram is a harmonious blend of single malts from the islands of Arran, Orkney, Jura and Islay and exudes Island characteristics at every whiff and sip. Rock Island used to be called “Rock Oyster” but they changed the name because not everyone likes oysters. Although I fully understand from a marketing point of view, I prefer the latter.
Nose: Sea air permeated peat, charred driftwood, crusty barnacles on an old wharf piling.
Palate: Salty brine, spicy black pepper, tidal peat smoke, warm vanilla and oatmeal.
Finish: A smoldering beach fire that refuses to extinguish as it warms and dries the salt on your skin after a chilly dip in the sea.
Rating: 9.2/10
